Good to know

Editable text rebuilds text in Word. Complex columns, tables and graphics may need cleanup.

Preserve layout places page images in Word. It keeps the appearance, but text is not editable.

Scanned PDF / OCR recognizes printed text. Choose the correct language and review the result.

A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Turn a scanned PDF into editable Word text

A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages. OCR reads the printed characters in those pictures and creates text you can edit. This page starts with Scanned PDF / OCR selected; the output is a DOCX document rather than a set of page images.

  1. Choose your scanned PDF. Select up to 20 pages per document using Page selection, or leave it blank for a document within that limit.

  2. Choose the language printed on the page. English is selected initially; Hindi, Telugu, Afrikaans and supported mixed-English options are also available.

  3. Select Convert to Word and wait for recognition to finish. Download the DOCX, compare it with the scan and correct recognition or formatting errors.

Check whether OCR is needed

Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If individual words can be selected, the PDF may already contain text. The regular PDF to Word tool can extract that text with Editable text mode, avoiding unnecessary recognition.

Choose language before converting

Recognition works best when the language setting matches the document. For a page combining English and Hindi or Telugu, select the corresponding mixed option. Clear, upright printed text is more reliable than handwriting, blurred photos or text at an angle.

Expect formatting cleanup

OCR output contains editable words, but it does not recreate every table, column or graphic. Review reading order, names, amounts, punctuation and page breaks in Word. Use Preserve layout in the regular converter when appearance matters more than editable text.

Work in small page ranges

Recognition takes place on your device and can use significant memory. Start with one or two pages to check the language and quality before converting a longer range. Keep the tab open, and split a long scan into ranges of no more than 20 selected pages.

Common questions

Does this support handwritten documents?

The tool is intended for printed text. Handwriting can produce inaccurate or incomplete results and must be checked carefully.

What are the file and page limits?

You can select up to 10 PDF files, 25 MB each and 100 MB per batch. OCR supports up to 20 selected pages per PDF. A page range is applied to every file in the batch.

Why did recognition produce incorrect words?

Common causes include the wrong language, small or blurred text, skewed pages and complex layouts. Try a clearer scan and the correct language, then compare the output against the original.

Can I use this without uploading private documents?

Document contents are processed in your browser. The site downloads the recognition libraries and language data needed for the conversion. It does not store your document or results in a cloud conversion history.
