A PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to png to webp

Convert PNG images to WebP with support for transparent backgrounds.

  1. Choose your PNG images and keep WebP output selected.

  2. Under Advanced, keep transparency enabled if the PNG has a transparent background. Set quality and dimensions.

  3. Process and inspect transparent edges, text and gradients before downloading.

Preserving transparency is not preserving every pixel

WebP can keep an alpha channel while its colour data changes through compression. A logo’s edges may remain transparent but look different. Inspect against both light and dark backgrounds if the asset will appear on different page colours.

Keep a master for design work

Use the original PNG as the master for future edits. This tool’s browser quality control does not promise lossless WebP. For pixel-exact diagrams or small interface graphics, compare the exported result carefully or retain PNG.

Common questions

What if the destination rejects WebP?

Use the original PNG or convert to JPG if transparency is unnecessary. The output must match the receiving application’s supported formats; renaming a WebP file does not change its encoding.
