PNG avoids adding JPEG compression artifacts on this export. It is useful when a destination specifically requests PNG or you plan further edits. It cannot restore detail already removed by the original JPG.
A white background in a JPG stays white after format conversion. Changing the extension or output format does not identify the subject or make its background transparent. Use an appropriate background-removal tool separately if that is your goal.
Photographs contain many subtle colours. PNG lossless encoding often needs more bytes than JPEG for that content. If size matters and PNG is not required, keep the JPG.
