PDF to Word: choose editable text, OCR or page images
A decision guide for digital PDFs, scanned pages and documents whose layout must remain intact.
First, find out what kind of PDF you have
Open the PDF and try to select a word with your cursor. If you can highlight individual letters and copy a sentence, the file probably has a text layer. If dragging only selects a rectangular part of the page, it is likely a scan or a page image. Some files have both, so check more than one page.
A text layer does not guarantee a clean Word result. Multi-column pages, tables and unusual fonts can still produce an unexpected reading order. Start with one representative page before converting a long document.

A practical test before a large batch
- Choose a page with the most difficult content: a table, small text or two columns.
- Convert that page with the mode that matches your goal. If it is a scan, set the printed language first.
- Open the DOCX in a Word-compatible editor. Check reading order, numbers, page breaks and images.
- If editing fails but visual fidelity matters, switch to Preserve layout. If appearance is secondary, correct the editable result manually.
What this converter cannot promise
DOCX is an editable document format, while a PDF describes a fixed page. Recreating complex layout is therefore imperfect. For exact reproduction, use the source document’s own export if you have it. A signed PDF should be kept as the original record; a converted Word copy is not a substitute for its signature.
