A PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to compress image

Reduce image file size while retaining the original JPG, PNG or WebP format.

  1. Choose your original JPG, PNG or WebP. Keep Original format selected if the receiving service requires the same format.

  2. Use quality for JPG or WebP, or choose Target file size. Decide whether dimensions may shrink before processing.

  3. Compare bytes, dimensions and fine detail in the result. Download only after checking any missed-target warning.

Why PNG may not shrink

PNG uses lossless browser encoding. A quality slider does not reduce PNG detail as it does for JPG. A screenshot with sharp text may be best kept as PNG; for a photograph, try JPG if the receiving service permits it.

A realistic upload check

If a form requires 100,000 bytes, a 100 KB target here means 102,400 bytes and can still be rejected. Try 97 KB, then check the downloaded file. Keep required pixel dimensions fixed by disabling automatic target resizing.

Common questions

Why did compression produce a larger file?

An original can already be efficiently encoded. Re-encoding is not guaranteed to reduce it. Compare the reported sizes and keep the original when it is smaller and already meets the requirement.
